Re: Compromise Game
in reply to a message by myth
For organization purposes, so far we agree on:
BOYS:
August - middle name
Patrick
Anthony
Mathias - I pronounce it muh-thigh-us.
Benjamin (nickname Ben?)

GIRLS:
Helena - middle name
Lynn - middle name first girl
Tempest
Catriona - I pronounce it cat-tree-oh-nah.
Amelia - middle name
Niamh
Kathleen

I understand your dislike of Estel, it’s a Lord of the Rings name. That’s fine by me! The rest of the boy’s I’m fine with not using! Ruth I have to insist upon as it’s the name of a favorite great-grandmother. The other girl’s ones I’m fine with not using.

As for your on-the-fences:

BOYS:
Diarmad - it’s Scottish, pronounces deer-mid. We don’t have to use it, though.
Eoin - we can just go with Owen if you’d prefer!
Tristan - this one isn’t a huge favorite, so we don’t have to use it.
GIRLS:
Sinéad - Irish, pronounced shin-ay-ehd (as best i can write it, anyway). This is a favorite of mine, so I’d prefer to use it.
Victoria - this one isn’t a huge favorite, so we don’t have to use it.

Combinations don’t matter much to me, as long as we don’t have too many of the same sounds. I especially hate two names ending in -a (for example, Victoria Amelia). Other than that, anything goes.

From your favorites, I like:
BOYS:
Thomas “Tam” - Thomas is fine, but I’m not sure if the nickname is a typo or if you meant to write Tam. I’d prefer this as a middle name, honestly.
Rafael
Evander
Nathaniel - I hate the nickname Neil for this one, though
Peregrine - only if we can call him Pippin. Another Lord of the Rings thing.
Jonah / Jonas - I prefer Jonas, but either work.
Edmund
Hugo

GIRLS:
Silvie
Maeve - just a question - how do you pronounce this one?
Fiona
Lucy
Matilda “Tilda” - I prefer Tilda for a nickname
Minerva
Diana
Guinevere “Gwen”
Thea - I love Thea! It’s fine as a stand-alone name in my opinion
Viola
Claire - I see this more as a middle
Bethan
Lyra - do you pronounce it lee-rah or lie-rah?
Juniper - better as a middle, in my opinion

I’m not sure about:
BOYS:
Isaac - it’s my cousin’s name, but I’m not sure if I like it enough
Gareth - the sound bothers me, but I love the way it looks

GIRLS:
Rosemary - I would personally prefer other names beginning with Rose, but if you’re set on this one, that’s fine!
Cecily - I’m just not sure if I like it enough
Sibyl - again, just not sure if I like it enough

I don’t like:
BOYS:
Alfred - too dated, makes me think of alfalfa and alfredo
Leander - I don’t like the sound
Fitzroy & Fitzwilliam - remind me of an ex-friend I’d rather forget
Cyrus - dated
Ellis - too feminine

A couple more:
Nora/Norah
River (male or female, though I prefer it on a girl)
Megan/Meghan/Maegan/any other spelling
Luna
Caspian
Rory (male or female, can be a nickname)~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Okay… Phew that’s a lot of names! So we have:
BOYS:
Patrick
Anthony
Mathias
Benjamin “Ben”
Diarmad
Rafael
Evander
Peregrine “Pippin”
Jonas
Edmund
Eoin
Hugo
Thomas - middle name (I meant to write Tam, but I’m fine making it a middle name.)
August - middle name
GIRLS:
Tempest
Catriona
Niamh
Kathleen
Ruth - It’s cool you want to honor your great-grandmother.
Sinéad
Silvie
Maeve - I pronounce it mayv
Fiona
Lucy
Matilda “Tilda”
Minerva
Lyra - I pronounce it lie-rah but I’m open to both pronunciations
Diana
Guinevere “Gwen”
Thea
Viola
Bethan
Lynn - middle name first girl
Amelia - middle name
Helena - middle name
Juniper - middle name
Claire - middle nameFor your on-the-fences:
BOYS:
Isaac - I’m definitely fine not using it as it’s not one of my top names.
Gareth - I kind of see what you mean about the sound. I’m fine not using it.
GIRLS:
Rosemary - If you’d like to suggest other names you like that begin with Rose I tend to like those as well. Otherwise I’m not super attached to Rosemary so we don’t have to use it.
Cecily - I’m fine not using it.
Sibyl - I’m fine not using it; it’s not one of my top names. From your new list I like:
BOYS:
Caspian - I love this one!
Rory - As a boy’s name I don’t think it needs to be a nickname.
GIRLS:
Nora - I prefer the spelling without an h.
River - I prefer it as a middle name but I’d be open to using it as a first name
Megan/Meghan/Maegan - I’d rather have it as a middle name, I don’t care about the spelling
Luna - It’s not my favorite but I do like it
Rory - As a girls name I think it needs a full name, maybe Aurora or Roberta? Our new lists then become:
BOYS:
Patrick
Anthony
Mathias
Benjamin “Ben”
Diarmad
Rafael
Evander
Peregrine “Pippin”
Jonas
Edmund
Eoin
Caspian
Rory
Hugo
Thomas - middle name

I pronounce Maeve and Lyra the same way you do, so there’s no confusion there! For Rose names, my personal favorite is Rosalind. I also like Rosalie.

Amelia - middle name
Helena - middle name
Juniper - middle name
Claire - middle name
River - middle name
Megan/Meghan/Maegan - middle name

I’m going to rank too. Also, it seems like we have more girls than boy names, so I guess we could go ahead and choose genders? From most to least favorite:

BOYS:
1 Eoin
2 Caspian
3 Mathias
4 Hugo
5 Patrick
6 Peregrine “Pippin”
7 Jonas
8 Evander
9 Rory
10 Diarmad
11 Rafael
12 Edmund
13 Benjamin “Ben”
14 Anthony

GIRLS:
1 Sinéad
2 Tempest
3 Catriona
4 Niamh
5 Kathleen
6 Lyra
7 Bethan
8 Maeve
9 Guinevere “Gwen:
10 Thea
11 Nora
12 Fiona
13 Luna
14 Viola
15 Matilda “Tilda”
16 Minerva
17 Lucy
18 Diana
19 Silvie

We could also narrow down to top 5 that we both like, maybe using the ranked lists?

I did some quick data gathering from our lists. For each gender, I set both lists next to each other, determined the difference in ratings and the cumulative total from the ratings. I then made lists of names that have the lowest average rating and the names we agreed on the rating for the most (that particular one isn’t particularly helpful, but I did it just for fun). Here goes!BOYS:

Wow, that’s a lot! I’m also happy with the top 5 overall preferred lists, we just have to pick which ones we’d most likely use. As for Ruth, I’d likely use it more as a middle name. I’m okay with two boys and one girl, as that way it might be easier to choose names. Or we could just go with two, one of each. Whichever you prefer!

So I wasn’t quite sure what to do and I turned to statistics again. Using the positions of the overall preferred names on our original lists, I created new lists and found the rankings by average and my difference again. (You don’t actually need to read this. It’s just my thought process.)Top 5 Overall Preferred:
1. Caspian
2. Peregrine “Pippin”
3. Hugo
4. Mathias
5. Evander / Rafael1 Caspian 1 Rafael

1. Caspian / Peregrine “Pippin” / Evander [1]
2. Hugo [2]
3. Mathias [4]
4. Rafael [5]By discarding the least overall preferred (Evander) and the name with the least consensus (Rafael) I got the following list, in order of likely overall preference.Caspian
Peregrine “Pippin”
Hugo
Mathias
Caspian’s definitely my favorite and, based on your original list, it’s your favorite of the names we’re working with. If we decide to go with more than 1 boy, I personally don’t think Caspian and Peregrine “Pippin” work well as brothers because they share similar sounds and have the same ending. I think Caspian would work well as a brother with both Hugo and Mathias, though I lean slightly more towards Hugo because they would share literary references. Some combos:
Caspian Thomas
Caspian Evander
Caspian Jonas
Caspian Diarmad
Caspian Nicholas
Hugo August
Hugo Mathias
Hugo Rafael
Hugo Patrick
Hugo Rory
Mathias Edmund
Mathias Anthony
Mathias Evander
Mathias Eoin
Mathias Tristan———Top 5 Overall Preferred:

I agree about Caspian and Hugo being a good sibset (also love the lit reference - I’m an english major).
Out of those combos, I like Caspian Thomas, Caspian Diarmad, Hugo August, and Hugo Rafael the most.
I also like the sound of Hugo Peregrine, for some reason, though I understand if you don’t!

I like Caspian, Hugo, and Catriona as sibling names, but that doesn’t both me as much as you. I personally would really love to use Catriona, so if you’d rather do just one child of each gender, that’s fine by me.
For combos, I like Catriona Lynn, Catriona Ruth, and Maeve Lynn.
I also love the idea of more than one middle name (I know, I’m crazy) and I’m really loving the sound of Maeve Catriona Lynn. But again, that’s just me!
I don't think Caspian and Catriona are very similar, in fact the only thing the share, in my opinion, are a first letter and a general "feel" of mystery (I love names that sound like the walked out of a fairytale).I like Caspian, Hugo, and Maeve; Caspian and Catriona; and Caspian and Maeve the best out of those ideas. But as I said, I also really like Caspian, Hugo, and Catriona.

Since you seem to really want to use Catriona, I see two options here.1. We could just name 2, Caspian and Catriona. Caspian Thomas and Catriona Lynn would probably be my favorite match, but I like Caspian Diarmad and Catriona Lynn as well.OR2. We could use your idea of two middle names and have Caspian, Hugo, and Maeve. I love the sound of Maeve Catriona Lynn and that would be a nice way to include Catriona while not having a sibling-set that, in my mind, clashes (so sorry about that, but it really would irk me). I feel like if we use two middle names for one child we should probably use two middle names for all three (though that's really open for negotiation) so I thought Caspian Diarmad Thomas and Hugo Peregrine August might not be too bad. If you have any more ideas or thoughts on this I'd love to hear them.Do you prefer either of those or have another idea?

I understand that it irks you! We can definitely use the second option (and I agree about using two middles for all three). TBH, I really love all of those combos!

Maeve, Caspian, and Hugo! That's great then! So we have Maeve, Caspian, and Hugo: Maeve Catriona Lynn, Caspian Diarmad Thomas, and Hugo Peregrine August. Amazing sibling set! Thanks for playing with me!

Yay! This has been a lot of fun! You're welcome, and thank you for playing with me! I think we came up with some great names.
