With three daughters, Beth and Henry thought they wouldn't have to wait long before they were named grandparents - especially via maternal, middle daughter Mattie - however, life hasn't gone quite to plan for the Holt girls...
Callie is academic and has always put learning above much else. As a child she was first to do her homework without complaint; the teenage years saw her not much interested in rebelling and instead she buried her head in a book. Nowadays she works hard as a producer having worked most of her life as a journalist and is dedicating her time to nurturing her "baby", a breakout podcast about mental health. Although she entered a relationship young (20) with a trainee doctor, when they reached their 30s and he admitted he had never been honest about wanting to eventually start a family, it broke down. Now Callie is throwing herself into her career and waiting for one of her sisters to have a baby so she can be an awesome Auntie!
Georgie is maternal and has always dreamed of starting a family of her own. As a child she would spend endless hours playing with baby dolls and as a teenager took on the "mother" figure in her friendship group, always making sure everybody else was okay. She always knew she wanted to work with or around children but didn't like the way the education system was heading - instead Georgie found herself as a middle school librarian, which she loves! She married her college sweetheart just over a year ago and thought it would be no time at all before they'd announce the pitter patter of tiny feet! Instead Georgie came home early from a training day and found one of his colleagues naked in their bed. She was heartbroken... But she could forgive him. Until, several weeks later, he told her his lover was pregnant and he was leaving. Georgie's dreams are shattered.
Mattie is the wildchild and the set. As a child she always came home with dirty knees and an excuse as to why her teacher wanted to see Beth; she rebelled as a teenager and Henry has lost count of the number of times he had to drag her home from house parties or clubs or fields! She followed her sister's to university because that's what she thought she should do but really Mattie spent the who time more interested in partying than her Fine Arts degree. Since graduating, Mattie hasn't used her degree at all, instead choosing to take up jobs such as holiday rep, flight attendant, cruise ship singer etc that send her to here-there-and-everywhere! Settling down is the last thing on Mattie's mind, in fact, she doesn't understand why Georgie and Callie are so chewed up about recent events, in her mind, they're all still too young to be thinking about family - especially when there is a whole world out there to explore!
