Arcadia's Sisters' Story KUY Congrats - Round 1
Here's a new-ish take on Congrats - it's a story, but you keep up yourself. The story follows three sisters, who each find themselves taking an unexpected journey into motherhood. If you are a storyteller, feel free to write a few paragraphs about each sister's experiences each round. If you don't enjoy the story aspect, just skip to the name lists and name away.
There will be a little dice rolling element in each round after round one, so everyone's family will be a little different in the end. There will be five rounds total.
Round One: Meet the Sisters
Story
Our three sisters don't see motherhood in their immediate future. They are wrong.
Oldest is 34 years old. She is a working professional, a journalist and producer working on a breakout podcast (what about?). She is currently single. She was in a ten-year relationship throughout her twenties, perfectly willing to wait to start a family while they built their careers. When she turned 30 and wanted to plan for a baby, her boyfriend admitted he never wanted kids and they separated. She hasn't been in a serious relationship since and is starting to come to terms with the idea that kids might not happen for her.
Middle is 27 years old. She works as a middle school librarian. She always knew getting married and having a family was more important to her than having a career. About a year ago, she married her college sweetheart. She was looking forward to starting a family... but a year later, instead of signing their first child's birth certificate, they are signing their divorce certificate (why?). Dreams of a family seem very far away.
Youngest is 24 years old, not quite two years out of college. She graduated with an artistic degree that doesn't (what?) easily translate into any specific career path and has been coasting by the last two years, working odd jobs and seeking out novel experiences - working seasonal jobs so she can travel in the off season, always looking for the next adventure. She has barely thought about settling down at all.
Feel free to tell us more about the sisters!

Oldest: Allegra May Robinson
Middle: Annabel Jane Robinson
Youngest: Cara Ivy Robinson
Allegra is bored with her job as a nutrition journalist who covers the latest health fads and diet pills. She dreams of reporting serious topics, and is working on a breakout podcast to combat the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Since separating from Keith, she's become obsessed with working, her podcast, and exercising as a way to come to terms with the fact that she may never have kids.
Annabel signed divorce papers at the request of her husband, John, when he got his mistress for over three months (1/4 of the time they'd been married) pregnant, even though Annabel'd have been willing to work things out. She used to love her job as a middle school librarian and never saw the point of developing a career; knowing she'd give it up to be a mother. Although she still craves motherhood, she is starting to want to quit her job to go back to school and get a degree in law.
Cara started at Juilliard when she was 16, and graduated with a Master in Visual Arts so she could be a ballerina, to her mother's dismay who insisted that Cara could do so much more. Less than six months ago, Cara fractured her ankle without realizing it and it never healed properly, which caused problems in her dancing. She was let go from the ballet company she was working for and has had to come to terms with the fact that at 23, her career was over. Since she has no talent in any kind of actual art (drawing, painting, sculpting), she has been struggling to find work, taking odd jobs like babysitting, mowing lawns, shoveling driveways, etc. She is not sure that she ever wants to do typical things like find a steady career, get married, or have children, instead considering a nomadic life allowing her to constantly seek out thrilling adventures.

Marina, Chloe, and Violet were close growing up. Marina is actually only a half-sister, the product of Lucas's first marriage, but had little contact with her birth mother growing up. She and Athena get along alright, but never really formed the mother-daughter bond. So different from her relationship with her sisters, which was easy and natural and complete.
Marina was always interested in people's stories. She scraped by living as a journalist, producing both for NPR and independent stations, through most of her twenties. Truthfully, she was only able to make it because she was with her older, lawyer boyfriend Michael. When Marina was able to co-found a show at her local radio station, an interview show delving into the lives of people in her community, she felt she was finally ready to start a family with Michael. Unfortunately, he never actually wanted kids. Her relationship fell apart. Her show was dropped from the network. She thought her life was over. But over the last four years, she's pulled it together. Her show lives on as a podcast. She's expanded the scope, traveling all across the nation to meet to people and talk to them. Part of her still longs for a child, but she doesn't see how her life could support it now. Nevermind her love life, which is almost non-existent.

Story- Louisa met her ex-husband, Frank Hamilton, at a concert she went to with a few friends. After building her career as a journalist and producer of a podcast for teens dealing with issues regarding anything from home life to sexuality to school, she told her husband she was finally ready to have kids. After Frank admitted that he really didn't want kids, they divorced. Louisa has been single for some time now, and doubts that she will ever have kids.
DD: Erica Penelope Bowman (27)
Story- After seeing what her sister went through, Erica was a little worried that her relationship with new husband Dylan Carmichael would crash. Dylan was too wild, he was not ready to settle down ever. Eventually, he left Erica for another girl. Erica was beginning to think her stay-at-home mom and wife dreams were too far off for her.
DD: Alexandria Eleanore (Alex) Bowman (24)
Story- Unlike her level-headed older sisters, Alex has never really wanted to settle down. Her dream was to be a traveling artist, but two years out of college and that dream has not yet taken off. Working odd jobs and having on-again, off-again relationships with the same people is what her life consists of right now, and she likes it that way.

[24] Angela "An" Jeannine Willingham
Daisy, 34, is sure she has it made. Pro journalist running a successful podcast on equality... what more could she want? Well, she did have a steady relationship in her twenties, but when she decided to try for a baby, it was all over when he confessed that he wasn't going to be ready any time soon. She has come to terms with the fact that it's too late to become a mother now.
Elise, 27, has divorced her long-time lover after less than a year of marriage… well, actually, it was him who decided. He realized quite late that he didn't really swing her way. Elise completely supported him, but she still can’t move on.
Barely two years ago, An, now 24, has graduated with a useless degree in Art History. To make ends meet, she works many jobs around the clock. At the moment, she can't care less about starting a family.
None of them expect to be expecting. Little do they know that their lives will change for the better.

Keren's day job is situated at a radio station, but her passion project is producing a podcast about women in the music industry. Since breaking up with her boyfriend Jason, she's found comfort in listening to her many records (mainly blues and slow jazz). She's become a workaholic to make up for the fact she's probably not going to have children, though she enjoys her work and she's starting to feel better about her future.
Being around teens all day hasn't helped Eliora get over her dreams of motherhood. Her colleagues have all tried to comfort her, but it's not helping. At the moment, she wished she could quit her job for a while, maybe move in with Keren, but money's not allowing that. Joel's fancy job brought in more than enough money, but his frequent business trips made them both feel lonely - Joel so much so that he slept with someone else. At the moment, Eliora's feeling depressed, alone, and stuck.
Seffora is pretty much carefree. She graduated in creative writing, but doesn't really have any plans for a novel or anything else. She's just working temp jobs scooping ice cream, preparing food for the animals at the local zoo, and lifeguarding at a nude beach. She's planning to recreate some of the road trips described in Jack Kerouac's On the Road.

Hanna and Gilbert met when they were very young; they reckon they were about 3. It wasn't exactly love at first sight (it rarely is with 3 year olds!). More a case of, mercilessly tease each other and make snide comments in a language the other doesn't understand. Hanna's from the Netherlands, and always spoke Dutch at home. Gilbert's French mother and Scottish father divorced when he was a baby, and so he split his time pretty evenly between speaking French and English. After several years of relentless teasing, the two became best friends, and eventually married aged 22. Eventually, they had 3 daughters, and decided that theirs lives were utterly perfect!
Else is always known as the sensible sister. She's a patient, responsible woman, but a lot of people pin her down as boring and somewhat stupid; those people forget that she's an incredibly sharp politic journalist, with an incredible ability to cut through politician's waffle. Her current job is doing just that. She's working on a podcast which makes politics accessible to all, simplifying complex issue in an unbiased way. She loves her job, but still feels a part of her has been missing since the end of her last serious relationship four years ago. Else knows it was for the best, and that neither she nor her boyfriend would have been happy if they'd stayed together, but she still misses him. She's recently realised that a family might be off the table for her, and so she's been plunging her heart and soul into her work instead.

DD [34] Amanda Rakel Holt
Amanda is mostly okay with her life. At 34, she has a good career as a journalist and producer of her own podcast (it’s mostly about women’s issues, though she talks about many things). Her last boyfriend, who she broke up with four years ago, admitted to never wanting kids, which, well, Amanda couldn’t live with. Kids are still something she wants, but it’s not her whole life - she’s got her career and her sisters and her parents to take up her time. Not to mention she’s thinking of writing a fiction story. She’s fine, really. Mostly.
DD [27] Marigold Jo Holt “Mari”
Mari’s only 27. She’s got her whole life ahead of her. At least, that’s what she tells herself. She’s working in the library of a local middle school, and watching kids run around looking at books all day makes her want kids of her own. But, at the moment, that’s impossible. She and her husband (her college sweetheart!) divorced recently, for reasons Mari’s still working out - he couldn’t come to terms with the fact that Mari is bisexual, much to her dismay. So, for now, Mari’s stuck.
DD [24] Faye Noa Holt
Faye likes to think of herself as a free spirit - she does what she wants. She’s two years out of college with a ceramics degree, realizing very quickly that she had no idea what to do with it. So she does what work she can - at a party store that’s only open a few months out of the year. The rest of the time, she travels. She doesn’t go far, but she loves it anyway. Settling down and having a family is the furthest thing from her mind.

Anthony and Mary Lowell were a typical middle class family. Anthony worked as a head accountant while Mary was a stay at home mum to the couple's three daughters Thea, Lulu and Tilda. The girls have grown up and left the house each choosing their own path in life. With three daughters Anthony and Mary were hoping that by now they'd be blessed with grandchildren, but through twist and turns of fate it did not happen so far.
Theodora, or Thea as she prefers to be called, was an only child for nearly seven years, but it never affected her. Ever since she was a little girl she has been extremely studious and ambitious in all aspects of her life. It came as no surprise that after high school she was accepted to Yale, where she studied journalism graduating with the highest ranking and being the valedictorian at graduating ceremony of her class. She worked as an intern at New York Times for a few months but soon found out that typical journalist path was not what she wanted to take. She left her job and started to work as self employed journalist and producer, she runs her own blog as well as podcast that is highly popular. She is now working on a breakthrough podcast about human rights, the main area of her interest. When it comes to Thea's private life, that is completely different story. Through her twenties she's been in relationship with Travis Johnston, two years her senior and successful lawyer. Although the couple never addressed it, the nearest and dearest to them already heard the wedding bells ringing. Unfortunately it wasn't the case. Once Thea came to the phase in her life when she was ready to settle down and start a family she found out Travis wasn't. He said he loved her, but he loved the convenience of their relationship as it was more and never intended to have a family. That was the point when Thea decided to walk away from him, she's been dating on and off for months, but came to the conclusion that Mr. Right just wasn't out there. Being 34 and with her biological clock ticking she feels that the dream of children is slowly sailing away from her and she is also coming to terms with it, all her energy going to her career.

With three daughters, Beth and Henry thought they wouldn't have to wait long before they were named grandparents - especially via maternal, middle daughter Mattie - however, life hasn't gone quite to plan for the Holt girls...
Callie is academic and has always put learning above much else. As a child she was first to do her homework without complaint; the teenage years saw her not much interested in rebelling and instead she buried her head in a book. Nowadays she works hard as a producer having worked most of her life as a journalist and is dedicating her time to nurturing her "baby", a breakout podcast about mental health. Although she entered a relationship young (20) with a trainee doctor, when they reached their 30s and he admitted he had never been honest about wanting to eventually start a family, it broke down. Now Callie is throwing herself into her career and waiting for one of her sisters to have a baby so she can be an awesome Auntie!
Georgie is maternal and has always dreamed of starting a family of her own. As a child she would spend endless hours playing with baby dolls and as a teenager took on the "mother" figure in her friendship group, always making sure everybody else was okay. She always knew she wanted to work with or around children but didn't like the way the education system was heading - instead Georgie found herself as a middle school librarian, which she loves!
