Empress: Demeter Azura Wei "Demi"
Princess Consort: Gemina Hermione Estel "Gem" (Simonides)Son?/Royal Ward: Nikodemos Shang "Niko" (Karmen)Of the illustrious Royal House of: Jiang
In the Empire of: Lai ShiJust two months after the royal wedding, a blind man brings a little boy before the court, insisting he is Empress Demeter's son by a young woman named Raya Karmen, a former classmate and sometimes rival of both Demi and Gem from university. When asked by a somewhat flabbergasted royal advisor how the Empress could possibly have had a child with another woman, the man replies, "She used magic!" Unfortunately, Raya cannot be questioned about these claims, as she has been unconscious for two weeks due to a sudden and virulent illness and is not expected to awake. While Princess Consort Gemina is in fact the most gifted healer and alchemist in Lai Shi, she can't be considered as an impartial judge, so the task of attempting to determine the boy's parentage falls to Marian Weaver, court physician. The results of the tests, however, return inconclusive; the child is undoubtedly related to Empress Demeter, but it's impossible to say if he is in fact her son. Demi wonders if he is perhaps her half brother, child of Raya by Demi's estranged father who years ago managed to get himself banished from Lai Shi and of whom there has been no reputable word since. Gem sugests that perhaps Raya herself used magic to make herself a child - she always did seem to have a strange obsession with Demi. But regardless of how the child came to be, Demi does feel responsible for his welfare, so she takes him as her ward.Gem warms to Niko even faster than Demi (who's still not sure how to feel about the fact that he is in fact related to her and the possibilities of how that might be - all of which are at least slightly disturbing - and who is also very busy ruling her empire), often taking him from his nanny for an hour or two to play together in the palace gardens (he especially loves watching the koi in the pond). He warms to her quickly as well and calls her "Auntie Gem." Due at least in part to little Niko, Gem is quickly discovering a love for children and a desire to have more.
