King: Adrian Robert Conrad Scorpius [24]
Queen: Elinor Katherine Lucinda Rose [16]
From the Royal House of: Crescent
About House Crescent: Rulers of the Gaian kingdom for six generations, their Sigil is a Crescent Moon on a field of Black with three stars.
Kingdom: Gaia
King Adrian ascended the throne when his father had passed away of old age. He was his father's only heir, so the pressure was great on the young king to make a politically sound match with a king's daughter of a neighboring kingdom.
However, after his coronation he went on a grand tour of the Kingdom of Gaia, which includes a island called the Isle of Flowers. On this island the people cultivate the most gorgeous, breathtaking flowers of all the world. Many of which are not only beautiful but have wonderful healing properties as well. The small island used to have a matriarchy and were rules by queens, but being peaceful people, they relied the extremely difficult to navigate Misty Sea to protect them from outside invaders.
Four generations ago the then King of Gaia had a little daughter who was gravely ill. He promised a lordship to the man (or woman) who could find him a cure for his ailing child. Rumors back then existed of a mysterious island full of flowers that could heal any ailment, but most people had considered such stories a myth. Nonetheless, one brave sailor decided to risk passage across the Misty Sea. Luck prevailed for him, and the island was found.
The queen of the island, a mother herself, was moved by the sailor's tale and agreed to give him the cure as long he kept the location of their island a secret from the massively powerful Kingdom of Gaia.
The sailor agreed and returned to the kingdom, and the cure worked on the Gaian king's daughter. True to his word, the king gave the sailor a lordship, but the sailor did not keep his word. When the king wanted to know where the cure came from, he not only told them, he showed them how to navigate the treacherous waters to the island itself and within a year soldiers had landed on its shore. No bloodshed was to be had though. The queen of the isle bent her knee, denounced her title of queen and arrangements were made to solidify the peace by betrothing her son to the king's daughter she helped save when the two children.
But for the sailor that had betrayed her trust, the former Queen of Flowers of House Verbena said he would be cursed, and his house would not survive him. True to her words, an illness befell him before he could be wed. Oddly enough none of the cures from the Isle of Flowers worked on the sailor and after weeks of living in agony, he finally passed away.
So generations and many years later the newly crowned King Adrian of House Crescent came to visit. Because House Verbena had bended knee the Gaian king of old, they retained lordship of the island. While they paid taxes and were beholden to the Kingdom of Gaia, they still had a degree of anatomy. As a result life hadn't changed too drastically for the Florians despite their annexation into the kingdom. Although House Verbena has chosen to adapt to the Gaian style of names instead of using flower names, the last middle name of their daughters retains a flower in honor of their old naming tradition.
King Adrian was introduced to their maiden daughter Lady Elinor. With a shy, demure smile, red hair and gorgeous green eyes along with skin darker than the pale Gaians, the king considered her an exotic beauty and was immediately smitten. He made every excuse to spend time with her and brought her gifts during his stay—which the king purposefully extended from a week to a month, then two. His councilors were growing anxious at the new king's absence from the capital and tried to convince him to return.
Finally he did agree, but not before he would take Lady Elinor back to wed as his wife. Elinor's mother was reluctant to agree to the marriage, but she knew she could not refuse the king. Her daughter sobbed about not wanting to have to leave her lovely home, but her mother handed her a handkerchief and smiled sadly to her.
"I'm going to miss you so much my dear child, and if I could refuse King Adrian and keep you here, I would. However, it would be a grave offense to refuse the king and would put our people in danger. I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to be strong and brave for our people, dear one. Can you do so?"
The young maiden nods. "I'll try to, Mother. The king has treated me very kindly and generously and he's not difficult on the eyes either." Indeed, King Adrian was an athletic young man with brown wavy hair and deep brown eyes. "I am foolish to be so sad, aren't I?"
"Of course you're not foolish. You'd be foolish if you weren't afraid. Being Queen of Gaia will no easy task, and I wish my duties allowed me to stay with you. I will go to the wedding of course, but then I will have to leave. You won't be alone though. One of your brothers will stay with you along with others from our household guard, and you may ask any other friends or family to stay with you as well."
Elinor brightens at this news, and soon arrangements are made for returning to the capital of Kingston. The wedding was a decadent, elaborate affair that people would talk about for years afterward.
However, storm clouds showed in the horizon. In private chambers, the king's counselors decried the king's choice of wife. "His youthful infatuation will be the downfall of us all," one of them lamented, for they could have secured peace for at least several more generations had the king agreed to marry the princess of the nearby king. "We cannot defend ourselves with flowers," scoffed another. "Should they declare war as has been rumored, we'll be in for a long and bloody war."
