Re: Kingdom Congrats Round 1 -- story added (finally!)
{{Wow, who knew Princess Adelheid was so popular?! ;) I'm posting the family so that people will know what the new Princess of France's name is, just in case they need to refer to her or something.ETA: Sorry the story took so long to post. Real life distracted me.}}
UN: RowenaRavenclaw
LN: Bonfils
DH: Louis François Philippe Henri Bonfils, Prince Louis, Dauphin of France (26)
DW: Adelheid Sophia Margarete Maria (née Kaarmann) Bonfils, Princess Adelaïde, Dauphine of France (16)
-DD: Catherine Louise Élisabeth Charlotte Bonfils, Princess Catherine (nb)
Rank: Princess and Prince (sister and brother-in-law to the King)
After Adelheid and Louis were married, the Dauphin lost no time in informing his new wife that he found her unsuitable. He had been hoping to marry the beautiful Princess “Madeleine” and not her awkward, tone-deaf sister, but the Dauphin had been forced by the King to “fortify this alliance,” and so he had. After that, Adelheid lost no time in informing her new husband that she found him to be a vain fool that wore more powder and rouge than even the most ridiculous peacock. And, although she did not say this aloud, she thought he smelled as though he hadn’t bathed in years, even through the many perfumes he wore. To say their marriage bed was a satisfactory one would have been a grossly false statement.Within the first month after her marriage, Adelheid discovered that she felt just as alone in the courts of France as she had at home, if not more so. At home, she’d had her siblings, parents, and the familiarity of the Bialan palace. In France, there was only her husband, her ladies-in-waiting (all of whom seemed to be named Catherine – Marie-Catherine, Louise-Catherine, two Anne-Catherines, etc. – and all of whom were French and seemed to view Adelheid as an intruder), the King (a proud man, who very rarely spoke to Adelheid), and Queen Catherine (who ruled the ladies’ court through fear and manipulation). When Adelheid petitioned the Queen for a Bialan lady-in-waiting – perhaps her cousin Nikolaus’ wife, Alexandra – Queen Catherine calmly wondered aloud at Adelheid’s attempt to offend her mother-in-law. The subject was obviously not open for conversation.The only person Adelheid didn’t feel ostracized by was her brother-in-law, Prince Charles. Charles was the polar opposite of his older brother – strong, athletic, and handsome. The first time Adelheid set eyes on him, she lost her breath. Prince Charles and the Dauphine have often been seen strolling in the gardens, practicing archery, or riding horses together. Already the rumors have started circulating, although the Dauphine and Prince are never without a retinue of chaperones (including Prince Charles’ wife, one of the Anne-Catherine’s).When Adelheid discovered she was pregnant, she was relieved. She knew it was her duty to produce an heir, which was why she tolerated her husband’s nightly visits, but neither Dauphine nor Dauphin could say they particularly enjoyed the efforts. When Adelheid revealed the pregnancy to her husband, he informed her that he would not join her again in her bedchamber until the baby was born, the reaction she had expected and hoped for. Adelheid knew that Louis had lovers (not all of them female) that he vastly preferred to her company, which was agreeable to her, so long as his various lovers kept Louis away from her.However, when the baby was born a girl, Adelheid was intensely disappointed. She had prayed and prayed for a boy, but apparently God did not see fit to grant her the heir that Louis and she had wanted. Hopefully, the next pregnancy would grant them the healthy baby boy she had prayed for.Adelheid was even more disappointed and jealous when she learned that both of her brothers’ wives had had sons, although she was happy that Bial had an heir. No letter was received on the health and progress of her sister until the day of her daughter’s christening.The baby was christened Catherine (for the Queen) Louise (for the King and the Dauphin) Élisabeth (for Adelheid’s mother, Queen Dowager Elizabeth of Bial) Charlotte (for Adelheid’s father – one of his middle names was Karl – and for Prince Charles, the babe’s godfather). Adelheid had no say in what her own child was named (for she would not have named the baby Catherine); the Dauphin chose their daughter’s name. Adelheid supposed she should be grateful that Louis had thought about honoring her parents, as well, although she would have vastly preferred that their daughter’s first name be Élisabeth instead of Catherine.That afternoon, a letter arrived from Magdalena, revealing that she, too, had had a daughter. Adelheid had to laugh when her niece’s name was revealed: Katarina – another Catherine!
And, because E. Tracy decided to post pics of Walter and Hedwig, here are Louis and Adelheid as I imagine them:
Louis - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8d/Charles_X_Roi_de_France_et_de_Navarre.jpg
Adelheid - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/62/FeodoraS-M.jpgThe fashions are a little off from what they should be in 1737, and I imagine Adelheid's eyes a dark blue instead of brown, but for the most part, that's them.
