Thomas's sister Giulietta, a much-admired beauty, was married off to a foreign prince when she was only fifteen years old. Thomas, seven years her elder, did not approve of the match, as he did not approve of the prince. But he went unheeded, and when the prince's brother died and he became king, everyone who had been for the match congratualted themselves. But Thomas and Arianna worried for Giulietta, whose letters were full of her unhappiness. Some of that lifted when she gave birth to her first child, a beautiful little daughter she named Rachel. The King was not best pleased with a daughter when he needed a son to continue the sucession, but he tolerated her presence. Three years later, when Giulietta was once again expecting, everyone expected it to be a boy. The pregnancy was hard, and poor Giulietta did not survive the birth. Thomas and Arianna were both heartbroken, and they were enraged at the king's reaction. He married his mistress within two weeks of Giulietta's death and sent his two small daughters to them, saying he had no use for "foreign females." So Rachel and the unnamed new baby came to live with their aunt and uncle. Arianna, who was pregnant at the time, declared her nieces duchesses, and she and Thomas named the new baby Giulietta, and they added Theresa to Rachel's name, following the Lethian tradition of four names. Within weeks after their arrival, Arianna herself gave birth, to a healthy and beautiful baby boy they named Remus. She and Thomas were thrilled; for four years they had tried for a baby with only two early-term miscarriages to show for it. Rose and Lucian were enraptured with their new brother, and theri cousins. Rose, who is quite a commanding figure for an eight-year-old, set the standard among the castle children, the staff, and the lords and ladies for behavior toward the newcomers. "They're princesses like me," she said. "So they should be treated like me." The birth of the new baby, though it pleased the people of the kingdom, was hardly news after the scandel and sadness surrounding the little princesses/duchesses. The people are quite sympathetic to their plight, and the empress and emperor-consort are more popular than ever for taking them in.
