Mirabelle and
Alexander wanted more children, but for years they were unable to concieve for seven long years. They had given up and were happy with their four children, but then suddenly it happened! They were all overjoyed, at least for the first few months.
Mirabelle was not sick or weak like the past two pregnancies, but somehow she didn't seem right. Instead of beign round and glowing like she should have been, she was pale and her wrists and elbows grew bony.
Alexander knew something was wrong and pressured the doctors to find out what, but they just told him that the queen was healthy, that nothing was wrong. So he just watched helplessly as her violet eyes dimmed, her beautiful red hair lost its sheen, and her creamy complexion grew wan. All of the children were old enough to see that their mother wasn't well, and
Mirabelle knew it too. She quickly finished the lengthy process of adoption--started four years before--to make
Wyatt her legal son, and made a will dividing her posessions among her children. She spent all the time she could with her children and her husband, who all knew by then what was happening. Finally, one night near the end of her pregnancy,
Queen Mirabelle Fire-Hair (as she was known to the people) breathed her last breath.
Alexander was sitting up with her and rushed for the doctors, who could do nothing but save the baby. It was a boy with his mother's red hair and a healthy, lusty cry.
Adam Michael Elijah Sebastian was given the name
Mirabelle had picked for a son, then names that sounded like the mother's who gave her life for him.
The entire kingdom mourned the passing of
Queen Mirabelle, known as Fire-Hair, The
Lily Queen, and The Wise Mother. But it was nothing compared to the pain the royal family felt.
Alexander had lost the love of his life, and
Wyatt,
Cecelia,
Rosabel, and
Evangeline had lost their much-beloved mother. None of them could be consoled. The children stayed shut up together with their father and baby
Adam, who they threw themselves into carign for. He was the last thing the queen had given them, and as the spitting image of his mother they cherished him.
A year passed. The king was still not over losing his love, but life had gone to a new kind of normal. He cared for his kingdom and cared for his children, and that was his life. But the advisors began pressuring him to marry again as soon as the traditional nine-month mourning period was over. The kingdom needed a queen, and the royal children needed a new mother.
Alexander hated the idea, but though he knew he would never love another woman the way he did
Mirabelle, he also knew that what the advisors said about needing a queen was true. He finally agreed, and chose for his second wife a woman he knew he could be civil to, though he could not love her. Countess
Nicolette of Veronia was a 31-year-old noblewoman he and
Mirabelle had known slightly. She was
Mirabelle's opposite--giggly, dainty, and fond of gossip and vastly expensive clothes--but she was known to only expect position and wealth from her marriage and to not want children of her own, which is why
Alexander chose her. She expected nothing from him that he wasn't willing to give. So he explained the situation to his older four children and told them to be nice to their new stepmother.
Nicolette was extremely excited when she was told the king had selected her as his new queen. He was exactly what she had always wanted to marry: a vastly rich, powerful, and kind widower with children of his own already. She settled into the palace quite quickly.
Alexander gave her few of
Mirabelle's royal responsibilities, but did insist that she look after the children when he could not.
Nicolette had never been around children much, especially not still-grieving children, and she didn't know how to act, so she was mostly ineffectual as a mother-figure.
Wyatt and
Cecelia had stepped up after their mother's death and taken on much of her responsibilities, and they simply continued to do so. All fo the children, even little
Adam it seemed, thought theit new stepmother silly and vain and light-headed.
Wyatt especially resented her; Mother
Mirabelle, as he had called her, had been so kind and loving and always there for him, and Flighty
Nicky, as they secretly called their new stepmother, was a large step down. The kingdom is also unimpressed, and Flighty
Queen Nicky has become her universal nickname.
