After the disturbing mementoes of her parents' past arrived, nothing else came or happened for nearly a year. Arianne was very busy studying statecraft, spending time with her beloved Leo, and helping care for her younger brothers and sisters. Then, just after Arianne's seventeenth birthday, she found another gift, thi sone left on her desk. A note had been left with it that simply said, "Many happy returns. Let us hope there will be many birthdays to follow. Do as your mother did and you will discover all you need to know." Beside the note was a simple gold band with a rose-covered vine engraved all around it--the very ring Arianne had heard about all her life, the one that her father had given her mother to send her home.
Arianne decided to find out the secret once and for all, so without tellign anyone she slipped the ring on her finger and went to sleep, just as her mother had all those years ago, and when she woke she found herself transported to a castel made entirely out of white marble. An old, old woman was waiting for her. Arianne was frightened at first, but she was brought up to be brave so she boldly asked the woman who she was and where she was. The old woman, it seemed, was an enchantress so ancient she had forgotten her name, and she had the power to observe everything magical that went on in the world through use of a giant mirror, taking up an entire enormous room, that every other magic mirror in the world, including the one that Arianne's parents had had, had been cut from. The old woman was not supposed to interfere in the magical affairs she witnessed, but she told Arianne that when she had seen the pattern of evil enchantments in Arianne's family she could not help herself anymore. So she had the mirror, the bracelet, and the rose all sent to Arianne, deactivating the mirror to hide herself until she felt the time was right. When she realized Arianne was grown up enough to truly help her, she sent her the ring. It seems the cause of all the enchantment in Arianne's family line back for hundreds of years is the work of one enchanter, another so old he has forgotten his name, and that it is the result of an ancient feud between Arianne's ten-times-great grandmother, who was herself a powerful enchanteress. The old enchatress will not tell Arianne how the feud started, it being too long ago to be significant, but tells her that he succeeded in imprisonign her so he could wreak havoc on her family for his revenge. The old woman tells Arianne that, as she was born on the anniversary of that grandmother's imprisonment and bears her name, that is it her destiny to free her and put a stop to the evil enchanter. It was the old enchantress's job to teach Arianne to tap into the magic she inherited from that grandmother in order to do her job.
Arianne agreed to stay with the old enchatress for a month to learn to use magic, on the condition that she be allowed to send her loved ones a message letting them know she was all right and would be back. When the old enchantress pronounced her ready, Arianne returned to her home amid much joy and amazement at her story from her loved ones. At first they were all violently against her taking part in any of it, but they came to understand that it was something Arianne had to do. So for a year and a half Arianne studied, practiced, and searched everything she could find for clues to the location of teh prison of her grandmother. She wanted to break her betrothal to Leo, afraid he may get hurt in some way, but she realized that her life must go on. So she and Leo married in a beautiful ceremony, and a year later had the most beautiful baby girl. They names her Isabelle as an homage to Belle, then Natalie for Leo's mother Noelle, and then Jeanne Danielle for Arianne's two favorite aunts. At Isabelle's christening, Rosalie met a young lord named Adam from one of the northern provinces, who had only just come to court for the first time. The two quickly fell in love and are now also engaged. Gabriel and Belle, Leo, Rosalie and Adam are all committed to helping Arianne with her mission. Though Florian and Sophie, Coralie and Mathilde all want to help, they are alll considered too young. Bertrand, Xavier, and Eliane are all too young to understand much of what is going on, but they are confident that whatever it is, their big sister can deal with it.
