Patrick grows up and inherits his father's workaholic tendencies, becoming a prestigious trauma surgeon at l'Hôpital Américain in
Paris. He marries one of his co-workers, an OB-GYN, and they have a daughter, but they become increasingly distant due to his round-the-clock work schedule. They separate when
Patrick finds out that his wife is sleeping with one of the pediatricians, and
Patrick instead becomes even more married to his job. One day, while moving into the small flat that he bought during the divorce proceedings,
Patrick gets a call from his father with shocking news: A man named
William Blanchard wants to meet the both of them.
Patrick immediately recognizes the last name, and realizes who this man is: his father and beloved childhood nanny's lovechild. Totally bemused, the three men meet in a small cafe, and
William explains: he had grown up poor, raised in the summer homes of the rich in Nice where his mother worked. Though he had asked,
Anna had refused to tell
William anything of his father until she was stricken with breast cancer. When it was clear that she only had a few months to live,
Anna finally admitted to her son who his father was: her former employer
Robert Girard.
Robert is saddened to hear that the second love of his life was dead, and both father and son were utterly blindsided that they had all this time had a son/brother, but over the next couple of years the three men become well-acquainted and even friendly.
William explained how he had put himself through university and was making a very sizable living as a bank executive, and was married with two daughters of his own. After a couple of years,
William and his family had met
Robert and
Patrick's extended family, and were pretty much Girards all but in name.
