When
Robert enlists in the French Army on his 18th birthday, 16-year-old
Claude remains at home with his younger siblings and becomes his father's apprentice, groomed to carry on the Girard family watchmaking business. In his late twenties, he falls in love with the young daughter of the rival Parisian watchmaker. Though both families are adamantly against their courtship at first, the happy couple marries and assuages the tension between the two watchmakers, who realize that it was better to do business with each other than compete.
