Fast forward to 1954. Robert, a veteran of World War II, has survived the bloody war and made a good living for himself as a lawyer. He does not marry until he is 30--his mother Marguerite worried until then that he would always be alone--but he falls in love with a beautiful woman eight years his junior. A year later, she gives birth to a boy, but unfortunately she dies due to a rare complication during a routine C-section. Robert is absolutely heartbroken, and temporarily moves back in with his parents so that his mother can help him raise his son.
