When you found out you decided to keep it from your hubby for a little bit. But it was not too long later (like several days later, before you told him) he asked you if you were pregnant. How did he know?
My husband is a very observant man being that he is an Inspector for the Feds (the “Tree Police” is what I call him). When I found out I was thrilled but I wanted to wait before telling him because this was a very unexpected pregnancy. We were hoping to wait another three to five years. I also wanted to find an awesome way to tell him he was going to be a Daddy! He knew something was up – I was a bit flighty, nervous and distracted (who wouldn’t be once you found out that you were going to be a parent?). We were driving home from dinner one night and I was feeling a bit woozy. Suddenly, “PULL OVER!” I yelled. I hurled all over the rear passenger tire. He got out to check on me. “Are you alright?” he asked. “Yeah. I’m not sure what came over me,” I laughed nervously. He was bent down with me rubbing my back. “Are you pregnant?” he asked, concerned. I froze. Crap. “Uh…” I stuttered. “I notice at dinner you didn’t have your usual glass of wine,” he grinned. “Plus, you’ve been acting really strange lately; like you’ve got something on your mind. Oh, and 2 weeks ago you didn’t use the heating pad that you religiously have been doing since before we got married,” he said bemused as he stoked my cheek. “Are you mad?” I asked nervously. “So is this a ‘yes’?” he chuckled. “I am more than thrilled.” He hugged me tightly and kissed me. The drive home was quiet but happy.
If you were engaged/dating did you get married?
We were already married for a year and a half.
How was your pregnancy?
At first, the pregnancy was tough. Constant afternoon sickness. My students joked at my continuous Saltine consumption. After about the 15th week I started to feel a lot better, tired but not nauseated. I had had a colposcopy about four years ago. Displasia runs rampid in my family. I had to have stitches to close my irregular cervix but the doctor was very pleased how well the pregnancy went considering this “complication”. After the 15th week was my favorite time. He was moving constantly and towards the end of the pregnancy it was fun to lie in bed with my husband and watch the little guy wiggle around.
How are you managing the baby?
Donnie was colicky the first few months of life. I was told that I was the same way. This has been tough for Jon and I but Jon’s been a trooper with the nightly awakenings. He works from home so he has more “time” to take care of the feedings and whatnots. Donnie started to level out when he was about 6 months old – sleeping through the night, not cranky, not in pain, wonderful.
Are you both still working?
Yes, we both are still working.
If the baby fussy or calm?
When we first brought him home, he slept beautifully for the first 2 weeks (besides the nightly feedings). It went downhill when he had colic for 6 or 7 months. Those were the worst nights and days from what Jon says. After that, he has been a joy. He acts like me in that he can be a bit naughty, always getting into things, testing the parental waters.
How big of an age difference do you want between this kid and the next?
Would prefer about 2 years or more …
Also the baby looked like one of your in-laws, did that suprise you? Did anyone else notice?
Not really. Jon looks so much like his mother it didn’t surprise me that our son looked like not only Jon but also his mother. We all noticed. They both look remarkable ;)

Both of our family's were thrilled seeing that this was the first grandchild.
My husband is proud that his son favors him but I think secretly he wished that Donovan had my blue eyes. My father-in-law always says something along the lines of "Unbelievable how he looks just like his grandmother." Of course, my mother-in-law (and her humble self) denies it but there is no way that anyone else can. "The proof is right there in front of you, Mom," Jon always tells her.
