It is a well known fact in the Dupont family that Arthur's heir apparent, Arthur Archibald "Archie", is not in fact Arthur's child. Anneliese has been "seeing" one of Arthur's parters at the firm, an older man by the name of Clarence Salpeter, since a bit after she married her husband. She first told Io in the strictest confidence, although Io felt she couldn't keep such a secret from her mother.
Jen has nearly disowned Anneliese, and refuses to talk to her until she repents for what she's done. Anne, however, feels differently. She says that Artie is so stuffy nobody can blame her for stepping out and, anyway, it's not as if he pays any attention to Archie.
First contact from Leo since he ran away from Alice. He sent post to Abe, talking of his marrige [..."Ally is a wonder, plain and simple. She dotes over the children and loves me without condition. The feelings are completely mutual..."] his children ["...Gabe gets along famously with Julia and Susie. They're thick as theives and the best children any father could ask for, although Julie may be a bit loud at times, and Gabe a bit pushy..."] his housing [..."The Flourintine Boarding house is a bit better than the Jessup. There is, over all, less squalour and bigger rooms, though the quality remains rather low... we sleep in one with Julia while Gabe shares a smaller one with Susannah..."]and his job [..."I work at a factory for meager wages while Ally stays home with the children. One Mr. Shawkat, who plays cards with Mr. Timmins and Mr. Halburton on Tuesdays and Fridays, has offered me a job at the bakery. This could be the money we're looking for!..."]
He showed the letter around to his family who, wile touched by Leo's devotion to his wife and children, are far from forgiveness.
