Merry Christmas everyone!
A lot has changed for us this year. Our baby boy August finally flew the nest (well, technically he had been renting our granny flat from us) and for two lonely months it was just James and I. Lordy, I've never been so bored in all my time so I was thrilled when I received a call from the adoption agency (the same one that brought Will, Kate and Anna to us) asking us to foster twin girls for a week. Mia and Livia arrived and despite a slightly shaky start the week flew by and none of us wanted to part - which was good news as the agency asked us to extend their stay for a month. I was delighted and I must admit, I woke up every morning feeling like my life was just starting, instead of being a grandmother to an ever growing brood! Mia and Livia have been in foster care since they were only five years old but it was only in September that their mother finally signed all her legal rights to them away. James and I knew what we had to do, despite the fact that we had been pretending to look forward to our retirement (you all knew that was a lie, didn't you?) By late October the papers were filed and by November, the girls were ours forever. I can't believe how lucky we got, finding two such beautiful girls who fit so easily into our family. They're nieces and nephews adore them (Belle especially who idolises her 'cool' aunts) and the twins adore them back. Both have commented how special it feels to be part of a family again.
Mia is the slightly older of the twins and is fiercly protective of Livia (I guess that's what comes of having such a hard childhood?) but she's also incredibly intelligent and outgoing. She fits in wherever she goes and makes sure that Livia does as well, although Livia is the more shy of the pair. Mia is a beautiful singer but when she grows up she wants to be a family lawyer, stemming from her experiences with them as a child and from her passion for both children and public speaking. She loved her new school instantly, joining the debating team where she has made some great like-minded friends. Livia also enjoys school and is quietly confident in her intelligence. Whilst she isn't as academic as Mia, Livia possesses an incredible gift for writing and wants to be a novelist when she grows up - she's already finishing off her first novel and it's absolutely brilliant.
Will and Aurelia's family has been growing at an astromical rate: since I last wrote they've added a further three biological children to their brood. The twins Josh and Harry turned three in April and are the epitome of little boys, much to their father's delight! They spend a lot of time with Will and James kicking around a ball and already show some talent for football at their age. Josh is the more talkative of the pair (like Mia and Livia, Josh is the elder and more protective) and Harry is pretty shy but loves to cuddle, so I've got no complaints! Fliss turned 1 last weekend which was great fun, watching her looking so bewildered as her brothers and sisters ripped into all of her presents! She was as good as gold though and didn't cry a bit even though there was a lot of noise and cameras present! She sat and looked like a doll (I swear she was posing for the cameras - do we have a Kate Moss on our hands?) and the photos have all turned our beautifully (I've included some of all the grandkids). The other kids are as always, beautiful. Belle is probably the first nine-year-old to ever have a 'long-term relationship' as she has been dating Josh for more than three years now! I'm happy to say he has started to assert himself a little more now and seems to genuinely like her (as opposed to just being petrified of her). Her music is incredible for a child so young and I wouldn't be surprised if she was in a band like her daddy. Lena is doing nicely as well, being especially good at maths in school. Her teacher told us that she is a delight to teach and everybody in the class likes her (which isn't a common thing in children of her age!) Her big news was that she played Mary in the Nativity this year and got to show everybody some of her ballet steps on stage. Of course, this means she is now a proper ballerina! Lucy is also great, cheeky but great! She's continuing with her gymnastics and is winning a lot of medals and has formed a special friendship with Grandpa JimJam. The pair are thick as thieves and often, I suspect, scheming against my enforcemnt of vegetables at dinner time (well I am a granny!) Will is great. He's the owner of his own independent label now and they're signing up a great portfolio of new indie bands - he's got quite a flair for the job! Aurelia is also doing well and I can proudly say that her English is now perfect, complete with Scottish accent! She's a lovely girl and we couldn't be happier to have her in our family. Luckily for me we've formed a close friendship so I get to see the babies on an almost daily basis!
Jem and Sylvie's family has also grown these last few years. They've adopted a further two kids Isla (3 in July) and Seth (1 in November). Both are happy little things, talking nonsense to each other all day long and behaving very well for their mummy. She takes them into work with her everyday at the shop and they play in the back room. Her floristry business is booming due to her obvious talent and business mind. It helps that her husband is Scotland's Wimbledon star! Jem won his second Wimbledon title this year and we couldn't have been prouder parents. The whole family was at the final (we completely filled the 'family' box!) and it was an excellent day. He's not retiring yet but when he does, he will teach kids at our local health club. I'm sure he'll be great! Charlie is doing great as well. He's something of a celebrity at school because of his dad and he's living up to the reputation and beyond - he's already exhibiting more talent that Jem did at his age. Isla can even hit a ball over a net now! Maybe they'll be the next Jamie and Andy Murray?
As you'll see above, Lizzie and Sam had a baby this year, a little girl called Allegra who was born on Christmas Day and she is indeed a miracle child. You may remember me saying that Lizzie was infertile - and she was. The pair where approached by a fertility expert who offered a trial and incredibly it worked. I don't think I've ever seen a happier sight than Lizzie cradling Ally in her arms, Sam cuddling into her and Charlie playing with Ally's hand just after Allegra was born. There wasn't a dry eye in the hospital! Although Lizzie had always planned on going back to work, the restaurant is doing so well the pair opened another in February and Lizzie has decided that she's never going to go back to work whilst the little ones are around. Sam has cut back even more on his hours and they spend almost all their time together as one of the closest and most in love families you'll ever meet.
Kate and Polly (although he'll kill me for calling me that) finally got married last year (it's only been coming since they met 25 years ago aged 6!) They have two delightly daughters Imogen (2 in August) and Esme (1 in October). They're flourishing and Polly is really enjoying the challenges of his new job teaching high school art. Kate continues to do freelance shoe-design and is building quite an online following! Her shoes have been seen on celebs such as Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz!
Annie and Ezra's family has also grown since we last spoke. They adopted a little girl in September (we can just tell that she and Esme are either going to be best friends or total rivals!) called Addie. Theo was a little nervous about the new arrival at first and couldn't understand why her skin wasn't white like Mummy and Daddy's. It took a lot of explaining that Addie was so special that Mummy and Daddy had looked all around the world before going to Ethiopia to adopt her because they knew she would be the best little sister ever. Naturally, he now adores her! I can barely get a cuddle of her because he'll barge in, insisting she's 'mine'. Fingers crossed that they stay close!
And finally, my baby August (although I have two new babies now!) who got married this year. I'm gonna have to apologise again for being so mean to poor Marie - I didn't want to let him go to anybody! However, after some 'careful pushing' I realised that she's perfection in a body and that she's quite welcome to have noisy August thrashing about at her house instead of ours! They've sold Marie's flat to buy a new place and plan on being property developers. With August's DIY skills and experience working as a labourer and Marie's exquisite taste and eye for a bargain, I'm sure they'll do great!
I better go now, the family are about to arrive any minute now for lunch and I've written a Bible it seems. Merry Christmas everybody, have a great New Year and I'll write soon!
