I think the misunderstanding is . . .
"You're a character" isn't an insult or in any way degrading. It's a sort of compliment! It means that you're funny, quirky, amusing, et cetera. People were surprised at your reaction, and at you thinking you were being judged, because what Magia said was not at all insulting or judgemental in English.
