Delene
My daughter's middle name is Delene (nameed after my mother who was killed when I was a child). No one in my family knows anything about the name other than it has been used in the family for several generations. Any info on origin or meaning would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

How many generations does this name go back? I don't like to use this explanation, but perhaps the name was made up. The de prefix lene suffix are common in created names.A web search also revealed a few people with surnames of Delene, so it could also be taken from the surname.

If it's any help, I've found census records recording both the names "Magdelene" and "Delene" for the same person. Have also found records of the use of the name "Mary Delene", suggestive of the "Mary Magdalene" connection.-- Nanaea

could you please translate
I can't tell if you were trying to provide useful information or if I was the butt of some private joke

Ihad not read all the faq's because the only other message boards I've used tend to be more straight forward without all the rtfm,nt and 2=f's or m's
I was not trying to be humourous but insulting. I apologize for that. I guess I was irritated by the "public joke" and missed where you were trying to be helpful. Thank you. However I did follow instructions. The gender for Delene is female as indicated. The only other information I have is that her side of the family "may" have "immigrated" from North Carolina in the late 1800's.
Again I apologize for my hasty and improper response.
However I must say that the "humor" displayed by your friends on this site reminds me of the "preppies" at my daughter's school who tend to make fun of the disabled and those without the financial resources to wear the "right" clothes. I find it quite distaseful.

Regarding the preppiesRichard ,I'm sorry that we remind you of preppies who make fun of the disabled! If we had known that you were disabled in any way, I assure you, we would NOT have made fun of you.As far as wearing "the right clothes", I am not wearing any clothes.Thank you,Andrea

Apologies accepted as far as I'm concerned. I have no intention to add you to my shitlist, for the sake of economy. Neither, I presume, would my eclectic friend Nanaea , who has a wicked sense of humor.
* Now as far as Delene is concerned, I suspect taht the most plausible etymology whould be from Elene with a D' in front. Check the Helen hyperlink for details. A more exotic but less likely derivation dould be from the Greek *Deilene*, meaning "sunset".

You appear to be new to the 'net, Richard. We Satanists don't tend to give out advice freely, but for you I'm making an exception.First of all, perhaps the worst thing you did on this board was make yourself look foolish. Even your attempt at being "insulting" was pretty weak, and Pavlos was obviously amused enough by it to make an entertaining comment regarding it in another posting on this board.Secondly, when visiting any new message board, it's wise to get a "feel" for the place by doing what is known as a bit of "lurking" first. This means that you read other people's postings, so you know a little bit more about how the place operates. If you had done that first, you would have noticed that there is a LOT of good-natured teasing which goes on here. It doesn't mean anything, and all the "RTFM" comments further down in this thread were not being personally directed at you. For you to have taken such comments as personally as you did was silly and defensive.Thirdly, you did good by providing more info on the name you're inquiring about. You'd said previously that the name had been in your family for several generations. Do you know where your family came from before they were in North Carolina? Perhaps the name has a European origin which one of us might research for you?Finally... you wrote: "However I must say that the 'humor' displayed by your friends on this site reminds me of the "preppies" at my daughter's school who tend to make fun of the disabled and those without the financial resources to wear the "right" clothes. I find it quite distaseful."It's poor form to wind up an apology with a disclaimer. But since this apology was directed to Pavlos and not me, I'll let Pavlos decide whether it's worth accepting.-- Preppie Satan (a.k.a. Nanaea)

Preppy?????Oh! Mah! Gawd! Are they really still using the term "Preppy" at your daughter's school? Gag me! Do they also all sit around discussing the merits of Ally Sheedy v. Molly Ringwald? Do they have "I (heart) Rob Lowe" written on their Trapper Keepers? Lame-o!Gotta go! L.L.Bean catalog just arrived and there's a big sale on Izod shirts at the mall!

Oh dear.... Have we gone and hurt your feelings????When you go and try another site "where people might actually be decent", just remember first to...a) Try at least to *pretend* to have a sense of humor and coolness, to disguise your overly sensitive, crybaby nature.b) Don't make any further attempts at "wit", because you just made a fool of yourself here.c) READ THE F***ING MESSAGE/FAQ/WHATEVER!-- Nanaea
