Hayo?
Hello everyone!
I'm very excited about getting to this site!
Could anyone tell me the gender and nationality or ethnic background of a name, "Hayo"? I'm assuming this is a first name? Or could it be a last name?
Thank you very much for your help!

The name could be from the Frysian/Dutch name Haie or Heike.

Thank you, Thijs!
So is Hayo an abbreviated name or nickname for Haie or Heike? Like Bill for William? And this is a male name, right?
What is Frysian? I looked it up in my dictionary, but couldn't find a listing for it.
I'd appreciate your input!
Thank you!!

Hello again,The name Hayo(m) could be derived from the Old German name Hag-, which means something like; a house or place surrounded by a hedge or fence. Also it could be a latinized form of Gajus.

Anyway, Haio(m), Haie(m), or other variant forms of Haie, like Heike (m/v) or Heitse(m), are still quite common in Friesland today. Therefore I assume that Hayo's probably a Frisian name, although not much spelled with a Y. Also, I don't think that Hayo is a nickname or a diminutive form of Haie, but just another variant.
(And because Friesland is a province of The Netherlands, these names are in-fact Dutch names too).

Thank you very much again for your explanation! I heard the name pronounced, /hayo/, and I wasn't sure about the spelling. I didn't know anything about this province, Friesland, but it really got me interested in it, and I'm thinking about doing a little internet research on it.In any case, thank you very much for your great help!!!
