This may be a long shot, but could you have possibly misheard the name of your relative, or have been given a misspelling of the name?
There was the male first name of "Aranthus" which was somewhat in use in the 19th century, when romantic names for males were more in style. This name could have possibly been a contraction of "Amaranthus", meaning "the unwithering". In the "The Language of Flowers", the amaranth came to symbolize immortality and undying love.
