I have been looking for a while for the meaning of Aoife (pr. Eva). I know it's Irish, but the only source I can find for its meaning says it's derived from a placename. Surely it must be related to the name Eve? Can anyone help???

My names Aoife and i'm from Ireland. It is not an Irish for Eve it is derived from an old irish word and means life, Radiance and beauty. It can also be spelt Aífe but not many spell it this way. hope i could help

i just read it means "life" and its origin is Hebrew but i think it was the meaning of eve more then Aoife. they are separate names. there is story in ireland that it was the name of a female warrior who chu chullan defeated in scotland and then had a son with

Aoife means 'radiant' in Celtic. It' popularity derives from the celtic myth of 'The Children of Lir'. Lir had 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, who were turned into swans. One of these girls was called Aoife

The information about "The Children of Lir" is slightly inaccurate. Aoife was, in fact, the name of the stepmother who turned Lir's children into swans. People always ask me where my name came from, and I always tell them about that myth. I like to think I'm a nicer person than she...!!

Aoife actualy comes from the irish name Aoibhann which is pronounced
EVEN. People think it comes from Eve or Eva but it doesn't. it means 'of radiant beauty'.

Hi,

Aoife is an Irish gaelic name that is pronounced like EE-fa. Because of the similarity to the name Eva, it was often anglicized Eva and Eve. However, it really has no connection to the biblical name Eva other than sound. Eve/Eva is a form of the Hebrew name Chava, which is derived from the Hevrew word for "life." Aoife is derived from an Irish word meaning "beautiful; radiant." It was also the name of a Celtic goddess.

Hi Meriel,

I was just looking up historical references to my name and stumbed across this website. Aoife is a Celtic name and as Norah said it was often Anglicized to Eve, Eva, Ava even.
I'm living in the US now and my name causes me a lot of problems
too many vowels!

Hi Aoife,
My name is Aoife as well. I noticed a mug that is in my cupboard that had the celtic meaning to my sisters name (Niamh) and I wondered what my name meant. I live in the US as well and my name has given me many annoying nicknames, and vowel girl is one of them.

Aoife (pronounced EE-fa - also spelt Aife), is the name of a number of legendary Irish women (or goddesses). One was the second wife of the sea god Mannanan Mac Lir - or just Lir - and turned his 4 children to swans for 900 years. Also another Aiofe was the wife of the famous hero Cuchulain.

Meriel, The name "Aoife" is a very old Irish name, i'm not sure of the meaning, but it's correct Irish pronounciation is EE-fa the english version is Eva, but any Irish people with this name spelt 'Aoife' pronounce it EE-fa.

If you find out the meaning let us know, cos i can't find it.

The name aoife the Irish version of Eva.It means either "radiant" or "beautiful" but I have also heard it meaning "life"!!!
