I just received a Mail from Prof. Heikki Solin. He is an expert on Greek names, but he is Finnish. He writes:

"I'm sorry, but I can't help you. The etymology of the name of the Finns is obscure, and so is the name Suomi. It may be related to 'suo' (bog), but this is not certain."
