Message: "Eila?" - Behind the Name

Does anyone know the origin of the name Eila. I've read that it is an Irish form of Evelyn but I was under the impression that Evelyn was Eibhlin in Irish Gaelic. Could it have anything to do with Welsh names like Eilonwy or Eilwen? I've also heard that it's a Finnish name, but I can't find a meaning for it.

The Finnish Eila

This Eila is a variant of Elina, which is a Finnish form of Helena. It is pronounced as AY-la (the first part rhyming with "hey").

Do you know about how long this variant has been in use, or how long it has been popular? I'm curious if it is a recent variant or an old one.
