Archivesorigins of name Lois
Hello, can you give me any information on where the name Lois came from? I'm doing a story for my newspaper on a local club we have here, called the Lois Club--of women sharing the same first name. It's a hoot! Thanks. I'm filing my story to a June 18 deadline.

Well a suggestion is given in this page's archive:
LOIS (f) "good" or "desirable" (Greek). Lois is mentioned in the New Testament as the mother of Eunice and the grandmother of Timothy.
Perhaps you wonder where in the bibel Lois is mentioned.
Here is the answer to that:
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
(Timothy 2 chapter 1, 5)

I cannot remember which reference work I got the "good/desirable" meaning from (some of these entries were written so long ago) but presumably it is meant to come from the Greek comparative λωιων or loion which meant "more desirable, more agreeable, better".
