The data base says (and so do most books): Olaf means
"ancestor's descendent" (shouldn't it be "descendant"?).
Now I don't doubt this explanation, but it does not seem very satisfactory when you're trying to think of a name giving motive.
So does anybody know more about the name and its origin that would make me say: "Ah! Now I've got it"!"

I don't know for certain, but I would suspect that it has to do with worship or veneration of ancestors - "ancestor's descendant" could be taken to mean "person having ancestors". ie, a child who could, by extension, be proud of having ancestors and knowing about them.
