I've heard that
Humphrey,
Adolph, etc. were all originally spelled with a F instead of a PH (Humfrey,
Adolf, and so on), and that the spellings were changed in English to conform to a fashion for classical Greek names.
So, two questions:
1. Did these spelling changes occur because of a fashion?
2. If so, when did this occur?
