I dunno about that nickname... People will be constantly asking the kid, "How did you get a nickname like Trip?" and wondering whether this kid started dropping acid at an early age.
Personally, I think you should simply call him by his given name. If people have trouble remembering it, then you must be prepared to SCREAM repeatedly at them: "HIS NAME IS CHARLES WILLIAM FORD THE 3RD!!!" until they get it right. :)
Alternately, just call him "Charles" until the kid is old enough to pick out a nickname of his own, if he even wants a nickname to begin with.
