a challenge of sorts...
I would like to rid the name lists of errors, and any help would be appreciated! Specifically I'm looking for spelling and grammar mistakes, factual errors, gender mix-ups, and formatting goofs. Basically, let me know of anything that you think should be brought to my attention to improve the quality of the site, even the smallest things. (my personal favs are the sentences I've started, gotten halfway finished, and then forgotten to complete)I don't have any ideas for prizes yet, but anyone who finds an error gets bestowed with the title "OnomoMate of BehindtheName.com", anyone who finds at least 5 errors gets to be an "OnomoSage of BehindtheName.com", and anyone who finds 15 gets to be an "OnomoMaster of BehindtheName.com". I'll think up some better prizes latter (ideas anyone? remember this site has no budget...).Email your errors to the addy at the bottom of the page! I'll announce the newly-titled in a few weeks from now.
Thanks,
Mike

About the name Maja : It may come from the goddess Maia , but in Sweden it was also a nn for Maria . For instance Maria Kristina was called Maja-Stina for short. Later Maja was considered as a formal name. Nowadays the nn for Maria is Mia .

Cool challenge Mike :)
In the best of "snivelling vilager" traditions, may I start off by by pointing an error straight from the horse's mouth:
OnomoMate sould be OnomaMate,
OnomoSage sould be OnomaSage, and
OnomoMaster should be OnomaMaster (I rule out OnoMaster, as it may be offensive to some Beatles fans)
P.S. For all Yoko fans out there:
The OED registers the word "onology" as meaning: "Foolish talking; braying....talking like an Ass".

Bought you virtual copies of "Les Fleurs du Mal" and "Maldoror" and DaffyD "Danses Gauloises" by Fred Astairix.
Business part was successful, wine was excellent and "le dieu des ivrognes" guided me all the way. Ingested cheeses in various stages of septic biodegradation and avoided ingesting things I enjoy riding (horsemeat).
Will take me quite a while to catsup with the board....good to be back :)

Göran, the Swedish form of George , is spelt thus, with two dots. Goran is Yugoslavian (I think). Göran is also spelt Jöran. Another Swedish form is Örjan.
Mårten, the Swedish form of Martin , is spelt with "å". I've seen both Mårten and Martin but never Marten .
Kaj is the usual Scandinavian form of the name Kai . It is used for both men and women. Origin may be the Latin Caius .
Orbra is something I have never heard in Sweden, not as a name, not as a word. There is a male name Orvar (old Scandinavian) though but it means "arrow".
Runa is only used for girls. The male form is Rune or Runar.
Inge is used for both men and women. It is short for names like Ingemar (male) and Ingeborg (female)
Rebecka is the most common form of Rebecca in Scandinavia. Any name with two Ks together must be Finnish.

Cool challenge! :)It's almost like working up from your white belt, to your yellow belt, all the way up to your black belt. :)HAAAAIIII! How many honorable onomomasters will emerge from the challenge, one wonders? You can't have THAT many errors on the site, can you, Mike? :)Regardless, your challenge sounds like just the cool thing we all needed right now. :)-- Nanaea

Hey Nan,Whaddaya think? Can we find 15 apiece? I've submitted 6 so far, but I'm not sure Mike'll buy 'em all. But forget grammar -- except for the occasional cloudy antecedent reference which is technically correct anyway, this guy Campbell is one literate dude! How bad is Pav gonna kick our arses on the Greek names?Dave

Great stuff Daividh - exactly what I'm looking for. I'm not entirely sold on the Emmet = "an ant" meaning, but the 5 other corrections plus the other notes give you a total of 6 points. At this rate I'll have to add another tier at 30 points...Nan, I'm afraid the judges can only give you 1/2 a point for your Oberon note (which wasn't technically a correction), giving you a total of 1.5 points, good for second place.I'll post all of the corrections to the message board once the challenge ends.

That's okay about the half-point, I told you I was nitpickin'. :)I've just submitted 6 more this morning. Can't let Daividh whup me. :)And Daividh? Pavlos may kick our butts with the Greek names, but I have a strong suspicion that you'll be cleaning up the joint with the Celtic names. :)-- Nanaea

Nice job Nan! You get credit for all 6 of those, bringing you to a total of 7.5.

> You can't have THAT many errors on the site, can you, Mike? :)Heh, you'd be surprised. The entries were written anywhere from 1 week ago to 5 years ago, often in the dead of night. So it shouldn't be too hard for some searchers to find many errors, especially since multiple people can point out the same error. And I'll give bonus points for any really obscure errors found.
