The editor introduced a subtle inaccuracy. I had written that the name of the ancient French village meant "Bear's place" and that got changed to
"bear's place." As I understand it, it was not a place where bears lived, but rather a place where a man whose name or nickname was based on the ancient Gaulish word for "bear" lived.
