Without more information (such as the ethnic background of your Zalina, or even where her mother might have heard of that name) that name could be a variant of any of several different names, ranging widely from "Salina" to "Anselma" to "Zelia".

Well thanks anyway. I don't know anyone personally named Zalina, it's a name I have come across online. When I did a search for it on yahoo I got the impression it *might* be a Russian name, but nothing that specifically said for sure. I'll keep looking, thanks again.

I'm kinda old-fashioned and I usually turn to my reference books first, before attempting a 'net search on a name. :)
I just did a quick 'net search on "Zelina", and turned up the meaning of "zealous" for that name at this website:
