Listing names
Hi everyone!
There are some changes to the name lists on this site. By "name lists" I mean the lists of names by gender, by letter, etc. that can be accessed from the main page and elsewhere.
Most of the changes affect the search filters, which can be opened by clicking the red "More Filters" link at the top of any name list. The primary reason for the changes was that the list of filters was getting too long and too complicated, resulting in me being hesitant to add anything new.
Here is a summary of the changes:
* Filters are now, by default, shown with simpler options. The simple options should be sufficient for almost all of the searches by almost all of the visitors here. Of course power searchers might want all the options that were there before... The complicated options can be toggled on using the button labeled "More Options" at the bottom of the list of filters (or by using your account settings).
* Some filters are now grouped together under a single heading. The pattern filter can be found under the "Letters" heading.
* In addition to filtering by "usage", you can now filter by language or place/country. The difference between usage and language can be a little subtle. If anyone has any questions about this I can explain further.
* There are now three "Community Impression" options that can be set (these search against the name ratings that visitors leave).
* In the "Options" filter, there is an option to order the results randomly.
* If you would like to list the number of search results at the top of the page, instead of just at the bottom, you can turn this on using the settings (you need to have a user account to do this).
* The other changes are mostly visual and designed to help people on smaller screens.
If you find any bugs or have any comments please let me know!
Mike
