Re: anyone heard of "Ilko" or "Hylko"

My Ukrainian g-grandfather also came from the Ternopil Oblast, born 1880s, and his name on his immigration record is Ilko. He went by Alec. If that helps at all.

I have just discovered this site and I think a sticky problem may have been solved. My grandfather, from Galicia, was known as Alec. On an incoming Canadian passenger manifest in 1914, it is written Ilko. I have been told that Ilko was used as a form of Alec. I was able to find in Wolczkowce a birth record for an Alexius Ruryk in 1885 - so far, so good - but when my aunt was born in the same village 25 years later, the father is Elias Ruryk! I have now read in the string of comments here re Ilko that it may have been a version of Elias. Can anyone "confirm" that an Alexius/Ilko might be transformed into an Elias? If so, I would be thrilled!
