Safran
Yesterday I watched the movie Everything is Illuminated starring Elijah Wood which is based on a novel by the same name. (Fantastic movie btw!!!) It's about a young American who travels to the Ukraine to find out the history of his grandfather's escape to America during WWII.
The grandfather's name, and the lead character's mn after his grandfather, is Safran. It's said sa-FRAN with the accent on the second syllable.
Has anyone heard of this name. I'm guessing it's either Ukrainian or perhaps Hewbrew, as the family is Jewish.

Safran is the Hebrew word fo "librarian" (with the stress on the second syllable indeed). Maybe not a typical Jewish name though … I don't know. Ask Claire.
