Svetlana
I know that the svet- in Svetlana derives from the Slavic root for light, but does anyone know where the -lana came from? TIA.

To supplement the theories already given, the name Svetlana was invented by philologist Alexander Vostokov for his romance story 'Svetlana and Mstislav' published 1802 (although it was the name's appearance later in Vasiliy Zhukovsky's ballad Svetlana that would popularise the name.)Allegedly Vostokov liked to experiment with creating names and was a fan of studying place names (toponymy).Sources:

Hi !!!I have three possibilieties..1 -ana end derives from the Latin suffix ana (like the name Maryana > Mariana) or similar cases (Matryona < Matrona)2 -lana as a generally Slavic suffix (Milan > Milena, Oksana)3 a contraction of the Turkish name Arslan which means "lion" as in the case of Ruslana (Ruslana < Ruslan < Yeruslan < Arslan). In this case this name could mean "bright lion" I guess.
