Hello,
I've found descriptions about the origin of the name
Joanna and it seems there's a lot of mistake! It is suggested to be of different variations as of Greek origine, other times as of Nordic origin etc. It's even confused with names of different root like "
Hanna"!
"
Joanna" is a variation of "
Ioanna" which is of Hebrew origine: יוֹחָנָה Yôḥānnāh meaning 'God is gracious'. Male version "
Ioan". It exists in the Bible and even before it. Because of the biblical influence, it passed in the
Christian custom as for male:
Ioan, Iohan,
Johan,
Jean,
John,
Ivan etc.; and female:
Ioanna,
Joanna,
Johanna,
Ivana,
Ivanka,
Iva etc.
Remark: "
Hanna" is of different Hebrew root meaning "woman" with its most know version "
Anna" and all its variations...
