In the Emily books by Lucy Maud Montgomery Ilse is Emily's best friend. I know that it's the German short form of Elizabeth, but how is it pronounced?

Hi there! I think Ilse would be more like EEL-zeh. Not eel like electric eel, but the "i" sound more like a cross between "ih" like "important" and "ee" like "Easter". And then the 'e' at the end is pronounced "eh" like in "ember". I lived in Austria for a while and it takes a while to pick up on how the 'e' is really pronounced at the end of words... not really "uh" like the English name Sarah, but "eh" like "ember". Oh, that's interesting. (I love the Emily books by the way.) Funnily enough, when I was reading those books, I read it as "Ilse", (ill-sss,) but I knew it had to be different. I thought it might be ill-see, my friend thought it was ell-see. But now that you guys mention it, il-zuh does sound right.
