Jubilee, among the ancient Jews, extraordinary Sabbatical year celebrated every 50th year. In the year of Jubilee, the land was left to rest; all debts were canceled; alienated land was restored to the original owners; and all Jews who were servants were released from bondage. The Jubilee year, or Holy Year, is still an institution in the
Roman Catholic church. Observance involves a pilgrimage to Rome or equivalent works specified in the papal proclamation.
