The Beatles song Michelle Ma Belle was released in 1965 and may have given the name a boost in use; its top year in the USA was 1969, when the combined total of girls named Michelle and Michele was 44,866, which was only 139 fewer than the number of girls named Lisa in 1969, the #1 name that year.
