I understand that Mia and Maja are both nicknames for Maria in Sweden. It also seems that both names are now used as given names not just diminutives. I have been researching family history in the Swedish church books and it seem that Maja was used more frequently as a nickname for Maria in the past. When did Mia start to be used as a nickname? Is Mia really different nickname from Maja or just a different spelling for the same sounds? Has Mia replaced Maja is usage - is it considered more modern? Is Mia or Maja used based on where you live in Sweden?
