Meaning of the name EMMA
Can anyone please tell me the ethnic origin and possible meaning of the name Emma? My granddaughter is distressed that her name has no meaning.

It could be false, but AIMA(pronnounced as EMMA) in Greek means BLOOD(RED)
True. "Aima", or "haema" (pronounced Emma)also appears in English (haematology, haematite etc.). However it is probably just a case of coincidental sound-alikeness. I have seen no documented use of "Aima" as a name in Greece however, although the related Aimisia ("Bloody"?)was a bona-fide Greek girlie name in antiquity.
Hi Diana! I have two baby name books and they differ in what the name Emma means. Both agree it is from German decent. One says Emma means "industrious", the other (as Sarahjeanne says) means "universal". It also says it means "nurse". I hope this helps. All names have a meaning, the trick is finding it!
Emma will be pleased to know she is not meaningless. However, she wants to be a doctor so I think I'll tell her about the "industrious" and "whole" and leave out the "nurse" so she doen't lower her sights. When they start respecting and paying nurses what they're worth, we'll tell her about the other meaning. THANKS much.
Thanks for responding. Please real my note to 'Cole
Thank you for responding to my plea.
