Are you sure it is Hindu? What language? (Could you please quote your sources when you respond ... it is difficult to figure out the detailed etymology otherwise.)

Well, yes, that "judge, leader, captain" is all over the place, mostly however with Arabic instead of Hindu origin, e.g. here:
http://www.muslimbabynames.net/boy-name-detail.asp?ID=2577Because many sites just copy from each other, finding that on 10 baby name websites does not make it any more trustworthy than a single find, however.I could not locate a reliable source for such a meaning, and I could not find any Arabic word either for judge, for leader or for captain that resembles "Diyan".Searching for the Arabic دیان also did not show something interesting.Maybe someone with robust knowledge of Arabic could shed more light on this...
