You know that 'meh!' sound that people make when they've got no strong feelings about something? Start with that, lengthen the vowel, and then the -el on the end is like the ending of Beryl.

That's a tricky question! The emphasis is definitely on the first syllable, but Merel doesn't really sound like Beryl-with-an-M because the intonation patterns (the rhythm) of Dutch are very un-English. The e in the unstressed syllable sounds much more clear and distinct than the final syllable of Beryl, and it also seems to have a slightly higher pitch.
