Re: Amy

Nothing, technically. But Amy could be used as a nn for Amelia or Amethyst.
In fact, a long time ago I read a short children's novel where a queen named all her daughters after jewels (Ruby, Pearl, Diamond, etc); the youngest, the heroine, was named Amethyst. Princess Amethyst called herself Amy as a nn, because she wanted to be different from her older sisters.

Vaguely OT...(m)
The Ordinary Princes by E. M. Kaye? I love that book! I always wished that my full name was Amethyst after I read that, because Amy was too boring in comparison.
Amy could also be a nickname for any of these names, which start with "Am": http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=am*&nmd=n&gender=both&operator=or
Or possibly for these, which end with "Am": http://www.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=*am&nmd=n&gender=both&operator=or

The title The Ordinary Princess rings a bell. The queen had six or seven daughters, all very beautiful, tall, and blonde. Then she has her last child, Amethyst, who is short(er), plain, and brown-haired iircc.
It was a long time ago when I read the book, and I found it while rummaging through the hospital's school library. Unfortunately it disappeared (along with my other favourite, The Princess and the Unicorn) the next time I was admitted to the hospital. The teacher had no idea where either book went. :-(

That's the one!
One of my favourite books. Amy was the youngest daughter and she was once beautiful and blonde, but a fairy gave her the gift of being ordinary. She runs away and becomes a servant in the palace of a neighbouring country. It's cute and rather romantic--I need to get a copy...
