It is quite possible that you are right: "anax" meaning king and "aner" meaning man.
On the other hand, another possible explanation would me "anax" and "mandra", meaning "an enclosed space, usually by walls". This fits in the name "Astyanax" (meaning "king of the city ("asty"). Will look into this and come back.
