the book was set in the French countryside, but I'm not sure if that's their origin.

If they're out of a fantasy book set in France and they don't look Frenck at all (which they don't) I think it'd be safe to say the auther took a bit of creative liscence, as fantasy authors do do, and made them up.
The names don't sound French, but they may be some Southern French dialect, spoke near Spain or Italy...
