Although it was coined as a nickname, I'm pretty sure it is used as an independent given name, at least in South
America (much like
Marisa,
Marlene, Marilia, Mariluz, and other
Maria variants).
However, it has a very tacky, low-class vibe, unlike the classic
Maria Luisa/Lucia. To me, at least! :p
