has anyone ever heard of this name? I found it in history class, Oakes Ames was a corrupt congressman. Some sites say that Oakes means oak tree-grove. Is this true? Does anyone have any other info?

A transferred use of the surname Oakes, originally denoting someone who lived near an oak tree or in an oak wood. (from the Oxford Names Companion - can't take the credit for knowing that!)
