I knew an Aloysius who pronunced his name that way. (m)

Perhaps it's an English (or American) pronunciation? How would you say Aloysius?

I've met several men named Aloysius...
and all of them pronounced their name as BtN describes it. They were all North American as well. I don't think the pronunciation would hold up well in a German speaking country though.

I read Joseph Wambaugh's "The Glitter Dome" and noted the name Aloysius, but never bothered too much with how to pronounce it... anyway, when I saw "O Brother, Where Art Thou," and I heard Everett McGill (George Clooney) say to the blind DJ, "Only four of us can write - Merton and AL-OO-WISH-US will have to make an X," I started playing with it in my head, saying, "Can that be... is it... is THAT how Aloysius is pronounced?" I couldn't think of any OTHER name that might be pronounced that way, and so I finally looked it up. Yeppers - Al-oo-wish-us it is!
Just looking at it? ah-LOY-see-us.
