Re: Mozart
See Aloysius for Aloysia, only replace the ending with an "a".Johann is YO-hahn.

Hmm......that pronunciation of Aloysius looks very incorrect to me.

It's the way I've always pronounced it.

Well, you guys know it better :)I just couldn't, you know, connect the given pronunciation to the spelling of the name. In German, it's Ah-LOY-zee-oos (but the last two syllables are short). I thought that it would have to be something like Ah-LOY-shus in English, and the -WISH- confused me. But after three attempts at pronunciation it started to make more sense...So, yeah, BtN was right, of course. :)

I knew an Aloysius who pronunced his name that way.Perhaps it's an English (or American) pronunciation? How would you say Aloysius?Array

I've met several men named Aloysius...and all of them pronounced their name as BtN describes it. They were all North American as well. I don't think the pronunciation would hold up well in a German speaking country though.

I read Joseph Wambaugh's "The Glitter Dome" and noted the name Aloysius, but never bothered too much with how to pronounce it... anyway, when I saw "O Brother, Where Art Thou," and I heard Everett McGill (George Clooney) say to the blind DJ, "Only four of us can write - Merton and AL-OO-WISH-US will have to make an X," I started playing with it in my head, saying, "Can that be... is it... is THAT how Aloysius is pronounced?" I couldn't think of any OTHER name that might be pronounced that way, and so I finally looked it up. Yeppers - Al-oo-wish-us it is!
