I've seen the name
Hermione (female, Greek) translated as "well-born" by a number of baby-name dictionaries. However, I can't find anything to support this; it seems pretty obvious that the name is the feminine form of
Hermes, which itself has nothing to do with being well-born, as far as I know. I've looked through Greek dictionaries and can't find anything even vaguely sounding like any portion of the word "
Hermione" meaning "well" or "born". Does anyone know if there's truth to this definition, or was it just made up?
