Metro
I've been doing some work in the archives of an organization, and I've come across the male name "Metro" about three times. It belonged to men who were born in and around the 1920's to 30's. The men all seemed to be of Slavic descent - Ukrainian, or Polish, probably. However I've never been able to find what this name is based from or what it means.
Has anyone heard of other Metros and what it might mean??

I haven't heard Metro but I've heard Matro... perhaps it's a variation of it? http://www.babyhold.com/list/Spanish_Baby_Names/Matro/details/
There exists the name Metrophan / Mitrophan / Metrophanes. The Polish form is Metrofan. It comes from the Greek Μητροφανης from the elements μητηρ (meter) meaning mother and φανης (phanes) meaning revelation. I'm not that clear on the literal meaning of the second element. I'm not sure how often it was used as a name in Poland but it is listed in the name day calendar.
